‘I like ruins because what remains is not the total design, but the clarity of thought, the naked structure, the spirit of the thing.’
                                                                                              - Tadao Ando
From your President
In searching for an inspirational quote to share with you this month this one, from Tadao Ando, spoke to me.  Especially, the ending…” the spirit of the thing.”  That’s what I’ve been experiencing these last few weeks; the spirit of the AIA Tallahassee Component!

What a privilege it has been for me to witness – there are so many bright, enthusiastic, energetic, and dedicated volunteers making certain that architecture is relevant in our community and for you and me!

Your component board is busy coordinating and planning events for those on the associates level and for those of our component eligible for possible fellowship in the association, by participating in the policymaking process and everything in between!

I’m going to share what’s been going on in the component, what’s coming up and more importantly, how you can become involved.  We need your input.
Everything we do has an impact on your practice.
Respectfully,
Rhonda S. Hammond, AIA

ADVOCACY AT WORK FOR YOU
Legislative Day 2019 was a huge success; we had several productive appointments with our Representatives Alexander and Ausley.  We are excited that so many of the students from AIAS participated in the event.
LEGISLATIVE DAY
Every year more and more special interest groups impede upon our practices by seeking to change public policy.  Policy is everything.  Understand that if we are not involved we are allowing others to make the decisions that govern our practices.
You can view issues at hand this year on the AIA website at http://www.aiafla.org/Governmental-Affairs_2019LegislativeIssues.cfm

OUR CONTINUED DISASTER RELIEF MEASURES
We continue our disaster relief efforts in the panhandle.  Our colleagues from around the state continue to send supplies for us to disburse.  Recently, Eve received the following text from our contact, Anita, regarding the specific supplies they had requested:

‘What a blessing…..delivered the last heater and air mattress sheets.  Oh the stories – 11 families were helped.  So sad and frustrating…..3 months after and the need is still so great.  Towels and laundry soap are what is being asked for.  Think people are finally trying to move forward but don’t know how or what.  Have long term recovery meeting determine how to help.  Praying for solutions.  Thank you so much for everything, it was very needed and appreciated! Oh and the little girl LOVED the clothes, especially the pink pants!’

Know your efforts and donations are appreciated.  We’re staying in touch to have an idea of what is needed.  To read more about what is going on see Eve’s report at (can we link to the disaster relief page here).
PRESIDENT'S STRATEGIC TASK FORCE
Our strategic task force met on 1/22/2019 to get started on issues and ideas for the New Year.  Two of the main ideas I’d like to share here.

First, was the focus on increasing our membership by reaching out to more established firms and architects and encourage them to attending our meetings.  Membership was also a focal point.  It was discussed that increasing our social events for the membership might be a venue to increase the interests of those not currently attending.
Another idea was to share the benefits of membership; maybe non-attendees weren’t aware of all that was available to them.  You can review the Members Benefits Guide at http://aiad8.prod.acquia-sites.com/sites/default/files/2017-04/AIA-member-benefits-guide-4-17.pdf.

Another idea discussed was to host a ‘Beaux Arts Ball’.  It was scheduled for April 4, 2020 at the new Proof Brewing Company.

Please consider getting involved with any of the events above by contacting Eve at eve.williamstwo@gmail.com.

The next Strategic Task Force meeting will be at the end of April.
